- What is SEO?
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation. SEO is extremely important to web publishers and clients as this is the basis on which the internet is built.
When a user ( you ) types something into the address bar or the search bar, Google or whichever search engine you are using looks into its vast array of memory to locate the information you have just asked for. If and when it finds your request, it will then display the result on the web page.
Now, before this happens, Google regularly trawls the internet, called spidering, with something called an " algorithm ", which is a set of rules to determine which websites are the easiest to recognise and hold the best and correct information for any search that may be carried out.
There are several rules that search engines give out to web designers and developers which have to be followed in order for the search engine to find the particular site upon a search request. We call these rules SEO. As there are so many rules and interpretations of these rules differ, no two websites can have the same ranking.
Very good SEO sites will have a higher " ranking " than average or poor SEO sites. Ranking is where the site comes in the result pages of a search.
SEO is an ongoing management for the life of the website as the search engines like to see content ( information ) changing periodically and will not rank a dead site.
SEO is now big business and many companies are competing at the top level. Prices are very high, far outreaching the cost of the website design.
- What is CMS?
CMS stands for Content Management System. The idea of a CMS is for several people to be able to create and edit content to a website.
It then follows that particular software would need to be installed on a network that these individuals or companies would have access to.
The easiest two networks that come to mind are the internet and the cloud. Most Content Management Systems are installed on a server that is linked to the internet.
This is particularly handy when designers and developers are not engaged to manage the website and it is handed over to the client for his management.
There are several CMS softwares on the market nowadays, Wordpress being probably the best known with Joomla and Drupal popular as well. This website is powered by the Concrete5 CMS. This system tends to be easier to train clients in its use.
- What is a Domain Name?
If you think of the internet as a telephone system it may be easier to understand. When you buy or are given a domain name, this name is perculiar to only you. Think of this as your telephone directory listing name.
Everything that is active on the internet needs a domain name, else users searching would not be able to find them.
A domain name usually ends in (dot)something ie .com. This can be generic to the country ie .co.uk, .gr ( Greece ) or can now be just about anything, the latest ending seen being .guru.
The first part of the domain name would be perculiar to yourself or your business ie tjbphotography(.eu). Gmail.com is a domain name.
This then is your domain name, which you can choose by searching on any of the web hosts you have considered using. This can be quite fun.
When you have this domain name it needs to be " hosted " on a server. This server is called a DNS or Domain Name Server.
Think of this server as the telephone book and your domain name as your name listing in the book. When a search engine looks for your name through all the telephone books it can find it just like you would look through the telephone book, the only difference being that the search engine knows where you are because it has already searched for new entries and has located it within its vast memory.
When you use your domain name as the title for a website or just for hosting emails, you can append your own name as a frontage for emails etc. Such as email@example.com.
- What is an IP address?
The biggest buzzword on the internet or worldwide web is " protocol ", basically rules.
As the internet is used by so many people from all over the world it was very necessary to ensure that a comprehensive set of rules was in place for all users of the web. One of the most important of these rules was identification of the user. As it would be nigh impossible to determine who the user was it was decided to identify the device being used to access the internet.
Every device accessing the internet would have an IP address, an Internet Protocol address.
Think of this like a telephone number. If you have a domain name in a domain name server, this IP address would be alongside the domain name like a telephone book listing. Another way to look at an IP address is by thinking of the return address you may put on a card or envelope. The postman ( or search engine ) can look at this and know where the request is coming from and send the results to the correct page.
You may see IP addresses written as a set of numbers. This is because it is easier for a search engine to find a numerical address, like a phone number, than it is a long winded written address. The search engine will convert the address you type into the search bar by looking at the keywords you have written and matching with the numerical address that is in their memory.
- What is a DNS?
DNS stands for domain name servers, sometimes just called nameservers.
A domain name server is a bit like a telephone book. It holds all the addresses of individuals, companies and organisations that have signed up with a particular Internet Service Provider.
These servers have all the information required to identify you and locate where you are, because when you logged onto the web you used your IP address.
Therefore when you search on the internet with any device which WILL have an IP address you are immediately identified and where you are because you are going through the telephone exchange of your ISP's, internet service provider's domain name server.
Web hosting companies run domain name servers and these are used to identify and plot the whereabouts of websites.
- What is an ISP?
ISP stands for internet service provider. This can very often be your phone company who may offer you the best rates because all they need do is install a router in your home and add you to their server ( storage device ). The wiring is usually all in place as the internet broadband can run on the telephone cable.
Their server will hold your name, address and all the IP addresses of the computer and smart phone, tablet etc devices that access the internet through their router. Also of course the server knows your location as the IP address is a locator device.
When you write an address into your browser search bar the request goes through your ISP's server and in the blink of an eye because we have the internet fetches a result back from someone else's server.
As your request has been changed by the search engine into a group of numbers it can locate the requested address quite quickly - a bit like a post code, each part of the number means a part of the location of their server.
